The practice of long range rifle shooting is comprised of the melding of the ballistics of the cartridge, the mechanism of the rifle and optics, and the skills of the rifleman. All elements combine in the instant that you must make that all important shot, the first shot, precise, and perhaps the only shot. Appropriate equipment is a bolt action rifle of adequate power and accuracy equipped with a telescopic sight, good quality bipod that does not directly attach to the barrel, or “soft” rest, comfortable shooting sling such as a target sling or ching sling. The rifle must have sufficient mechanical accuracy; the ergonomics of the rifle must fit the rifleman; controls must be simple, positive and easy to use; optics must be clear, bright, in focus and easily adjustable. Ammunition must be of sufficient quality to shoot minute of angle accuracy with sufficient remaining energy at extended range. Caliber selection involves two primary factors: ballistic coefficient (BC) of the projectile and muzzle velocity (MV) of the cartridge. Ammunition selection must maximize both BC and MV for the cartridge you shoot. Ammunition must be capable of one minute of angle accuracy and energy at extended range. Caliber selection involves two primary factors: the first factor is the ballistic coefficient of the projectile, select the bullet with the highest ballistic coefficient, the second factor is the muzzle velocity, select the caliber which delivers the highest practical velocity. The rifleman must have the skills to understand internal and external ballistics, know his rifle and his ammunition and to use his equipment. The Long Range Rifle class is divided into two modules: Module A:  Understanding Ballistic Coefficient, Sectional Density, Muzzle Velocity as it relates to caliber selection  Understanding Minute Of Angle and adjustments, Mildot or any ranging reticle and adjustment for elevation and windage.  Calculation of holdover and wind correction relative to caliber and bullet selection.  Building your shooting position  basic marksmanship development: trigger control, breath control, position stability, follow through.  Selection and understanding of interaction of optics, rifle caliber/cartridge and rifleman.  Wind reading, full wind value/half wind value, understanding natural indicators and making adjustments  Rifle zero and sight adjustment  Engaging targets to 300 yards  Range card development and understanding: understanding the performance of rifle and cartridge combination under given field conditions.  Module B:  Review and overview  Establishment of zeroing and cold bore zero  Position shooting including prone, standing, kneeling, sitting and over and around obstacles  Engaging targets to 500 yards  Ranging unknown distance targets  Advanced range estimation, wind reading, dialing elevation and windage, holdover, sight adjustment  Field rifle application  Rifle cleaning, proper bore care and break in procedures for maximum accuracy. Class 290 Precision, Bulseye Pistol
Description: Class Description – 290 Precision, Bullseye Pistol This one day intensive class is designed to develop confidence and competence in the use and handling of a target pistol. Bullseye pistol shooting is the grandfather of all handgun competitions. Referred to as bullseye, three gun competition or conventional pistol, the art of firing one handed at a circular bullseye target remains the most popular and frequently practiced shooting discipline. This format began with the 1941 National Matches as a means of determining the most accomplished marksman using a cross section of weaponry of the time, the civilian .22, the police officer’s .38 revolver and the military .45 auto. Bullseye events are about accuracy, firing from a standing position only, using one hand. All the elements of shooting coalesce in bullseye shooting with stance, breath control, sight alignment, sight picture, trigger control and mental focus all being tantamount. The skills learned in bullseye pistol shooting transfer to all other forms of competition. A good bullseye shooter is a good shooter no matter what he may be shooting. The elements of speed and power are easily added to accuracy but no amount of speed or power can overcome a lack of accuracy. Fast and fancy is fine but accuracy is final. There are three elements to bullseye competition: Slow Fire (10 shots in 10 minutes fired at 50 yards. Timed Fire (two strings of 5 shots, 20 seconds per string, fired at 25 yards) Rapid Fire (two strings of 5 shots, 10 seconds per string, fired at 25 yards) Equipment: .22 Long Rifle handgun, either a revolver or pistol; a pistol chambered for a centerfire cartridge of .32 or greater caliber; a .45 caliber revolver or pistol.
